Katihar is a well known town of India.This is the headquarters of the Katihar district and a super market of Bihar state. Katihar is north-east corner of bihar.This is border of Bihar and West Bangal.Katihar is a part of Purnea division and has total area of 3057 square km. Katihar District was originally carved out of Purnea district.Katihar was a sub-divisional town of Purnea district but on 2nd October 1973,Katihar acquired status of an independent district.The district derives its name after its chief town of the same name which probably got its name from a small village on the northeast called ‘Dighi-Katihar’ where there is a big tank (dighi) excavated for the troops.Purnea,Kishanganj,Khagaria,Sahebganj and Bhagalpur are neighbour district of Katihar. Katihar is located at 25.33 degrees north and 87.58 degrees east.People often come here for business purpose.

The culture and civilization of katihar are also very real and attractive.Katihar district have number of villages having good productivity of crops.Katihar has a modern railway station with facilities are available for tourists. Katihar has a major railway station under the North-East Frontier Railway. Katihar Junction is a five line junction. The 1st line goes to Barauni, the 2nd line to Kolkata, the 3rd line to Jogbani (Nepal border), the 4th line to Guwahati, and the 5th line to Manihari. The town of Katihar has a very cosmopolitan look. It was the main center of the jute industry of Bihar, which attracted workers from the Mithilanchal area of Bihar, the Purvanchal area of UP, the Magadh region of Bihar, and the Bhojpuri speaking belt of Bihar and Nepal.

Katihar is an educational center of Bihar and North India. R.S.College Of Computer Science and Engineering is in Officer's Colony,Katihar. It provides world class computer education in Katihar. It gives training to students to make them competent,motivated engineers and scientists. The Institute not only celebrates freedom of thought, cultivates vision and encourages growth, but it also fosters human values and concern for the environment and the society. R.S College has been doing this since 2006. It's syllabus and facility is at a very high level, but the fees are much less then other engineering colleges. Katihar also has a medical college where student's come from all over India. There are also D.S.College,K.B.Jha College,Chamaria College,M.J.M Mahila College,Sur Tulsi College etc. Katihar has many schools that provide very well education to children as well. According to 2001 census, Population of Katihar is 1,8,25,380 in which rural population is 1653761 and urban population is 171619. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Katihar has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 55%.

Katihar district has three subdivision namely Katihar sadar,Barsoi and Manihari.Blocks of Katihar are Katihar, Barsoi, Kadwa, Amdabad, Manihari, Balrampur, Korha, Falka, Alamnagar, Barari, Pranpur, Mansahi, Samaeli, Kursaila, Hasanganj and Dandkhora. Ganga,Koshi and Mahananda river are crosses through Katihar district.The topography of the Katihar district has been very much affected by the floods of river Ganges, Mahananda and Koshi. The district has alluvial soil and due to deposit of sand-silt by rivers and soil in southern and the western part has become sandy.Paddy,Makhana,jute,wheat,maize,pulse and Banana are the main crops of Katihar district.
